“Das himmlische Leben,” finale of Symphony No. 4

Originally for soprano voice and full orchestra, in G major, transposed here to F. Includes a page of translations from the German. Title means “The Heavenly Life.” The original dynamics, slurs and articulations are indicated, but of course there is a limit to how faithfully a recorder can perform them, especially the dynamics. They are included mainly so that the composer's original intent is transmitted, and the best possible recorderistic solution found. Includes a page of translations from the German. Note that we also offer a version for alto & bass recorders.The ending of the song text, “Die englischen Stimmen ermuntern die Sinnen,/dass Alles für Freuden erwacht.” was felicitously translated by Michael Steinberg, “The angelic voices gladden our senses,/So that all for very joy awake.” (From program notes to a Boston Symphony concert.)
